Why does the capacity of the purchased portable hard disk not match the actual display capacity?

       After buying a hard disk, careful people will find that the capacity of the hard disk in the operating system does not match the official nominal capacity, which is less than the nominal capacity, and the larger the capacity, the greater the difference. This is not the result of manufacturers or dealers deceiving consumers, but the different calculation methods of hard disk manufacturers and operating systems, different unit conversion relationship.

       It is well known that binary systems are used in computers, which results in the calculation of capacity in the operating system at a rate of every 1024. Hard disk manufacturers use 1KB per 1024 bytes, 1MBb per 1024KB and 1GB per 1024MB, while hard disk manufacturers calculate capacity per 1000, 1KB per 1000 bytes, 1MB per 1000KB and 1GB per 1000MB, resulting in a "shrinkage" of disk capacity.

Take 500GBundefineds hard disk as an example：

Manufacturer capacity calculation method：500GB=500,000MB=500，000，000KB=500，000，000，000字节

Conversion to operating system calculation method：500，000，000，000字节/1024/1024/1024=465GB。

      同时在操作系统中，硬盘还必须分区和格式化，这样系统还会在硬盘上占用一些空间，提供给系统文件使用，所以在操作系统中显示的硬盘容量和标称容量会存在差异。

硬盘的250GB≈250×0.9313≈Windows系统中大概为232GB

硬盘的320GB≈320×0.9313≈Windows系统中大概为298GB

硬盘的500GB≈500×0.9313≈Windows系统中大概为465GB

硬盘的1TB(1000GB)≈1000×0.9313≈Windows系统中大概为931GB

硬盘的1.5TB(1500GB)≈1500×0.9313≈Windows系统中大概为1395GB
